Brexit Transition For Businesses

There is little under a month to go until the end of the transition period, and there will be new rules to follow come January 1st 2021. The Business Secretary, has stated that it’s in everyone’s best interests to act now to avoid your business operations being interrupted.

 

The Government is providing a range of support to walk you through the changes. Make sure that you are subscribed to our newsletter in order to stay up to date. We will be writing to you with full breakdowns of any governmental changes, and conducting webinars to further explain any complex changes that affect you and your business. We are here to help you to help you to take advantage of the many new opportunities that an independent trading nation will bring. Make sure to check with your suppliers and customers that they are taking action also.

 

  1. If you are moving goods into, out of, or through Northern Ireland, check the latest guidance. At the end of the transition period, the Northern Ireland Protocol comes into force. There will be special provisions which only apply in Northern Ireland so if you move goods into, out of, or through Northern Ireland make sure you check the latest guidance at: gov.uk/northern-ireland-trade 
  2. Check the new rules on importing and exporting goods between the EU and Great Britain from 1st January 2021. Different rules will apply in Northern Ireland. Your business could face delays, disruption or administrative costs if you do not comply with new customs procedures.
  3. If you are planning to recruit from overseas from 1st January 2021, you will need to register as a licensed visa sponsor. You may not be able to legally hire people from outside the UK if you do not have a licence, New employees from outside the UK will also need to meet new job, salary and language requirements. Irish citizens and those eligible under the EU Settlement Scheme are not affected.
  4. Use GOV.UK to identify changes affecting manufactured goods, such as new marking requirements or approvals needed, to ensure your business is ready to sell them in the UK and EU.  You may not be able to sell your goods in the UK and the EU from 1st January 2021 unless you act.

In November 2002, having sold our other business interests off earlier in the year, I decided to set up Nordens Chartered Accountants. The easy part was knowing how to do it, as I had established and built a smaller practice a few years earlier. The difficult part, for me, was not following the traditional accountancy path. Having run businesses, both successfully and unsuccessfully, I wanted to help business owners resolve their short term problems and work with them to achieve their longer term goals. Business has always been my interest and I love that I can help business owners achieve what seems like the impossible every single working day.
