Carve out time to sharpen your saw

James Fowler in our Accounts Team recently stumbled upon this short story, which we’d like to share with you…

Imagine that you’re walking through the woods, and you come across a lumberjack trying to saw down a tree. He’s exhausted from working for hours and is swearing and cursing in vain.

You ask him, “What’s the problem?”

He responds, “My saw’s blunt and won’t cut the tree properly.”

Slightly puzzled, you suggest that he takes a break to sharpen his saw.

“But I don’t have time to sharpen my saw, I’m busy sawing, I don’t have time to stop,” the lumberjack responded.

So, what does this story of a lumberjack and his saw have to do with you and your business?

Often business owners get stuck in the rut of working in their business.

They do the same thing day in, day out, and in the end get the same results. And then they wonder why their practice isn’t growing, or why their debtors are still sky-high, or why their clients are always complaining.

Then somebody like the team here at Nordens comes along and tells them, “You need to spend more time working ON your business if you want to get different results.”

And their response?

“I’m too busy working, I don’t have time for that.”

And so, the cycle continues…

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. If you want to break the cycle, you need to carve out time to sharpen your saw.
