What is Corporate Finance?

Corporate finance encompasses the financing, capital structuring, and investment decisions for a business. Its primary aim is to maximize shareholder value through a series of strategies; these strategies typically involve governing a firm’s finances and capital investment decisions. These decisions can include whether to pursue proposed investments, and how to pay for these investments. The other tasks associated with corporate finance include capital investments, sourcing capital (whether in terms of debt or equity), or ensuring there is enough liquidity to carry out operations. On top of this, corporate finance considers whether shareholders should receive dividends, and the management of current assets, liabilities, and inventory control. The accounting side of corporate finance can also provide strategic insight into transactions, finances, and restructuring.

Why Use Nordens For Your Corporate Finance?

Corporate finance specialists provide the necessary support and insight into the complicated tasks associated with corporate finance. These tasks require a backlog of experience and expertise that Nordens can provide. Capital investment is one such task, and the risks associated with poor capital budgeting can compromise the totality of the business in terms of its financing costs or operating capacity. Secondly, capital finance is similarly vital, and relies on achieving a balance between debt and equity which can result in a business that defaults. The final task – short-term liquidity – involves a company meeting its current liability obligations when due.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here at Nordens, we know that Corporate Finance can look complicated. We receive questions almost every day from business owners nationwide that see it just the same. So, here is a little more on the matter:

Often, the main goal cited by corporate finance accountants and managers is to maximise the wealth of shareholders, whilst also ensuring financial stability and security of the firm in question. Evidently, these latter goals figure as key within any step taken for the business in question, confirming corporate finance’s necessity within business. Alongside this, other goals include profit maximisation and managerial rewards. Furthermore, maximising stockholder wealth is also considered an aim of corporate finance. This is because when stock is traded and the market is efficient, the objective is to maximise the stock price.

It is a necessary component for running a company, and is required for its survival, stability, and growth. Corporate finance focuses on how to maximize the value of the company through both financing and investment decisions. In basic terms, the business raises money, invests in projects, pays money back to its providers, and keeps the difference. Specifically, its importance is inferred when it comes to financial predicts, monetary management, budgeting, credit administration and the appraisal of investments. Evidently, it is a key financial component of your business.

Accounting is the process of recording the financial transactions relating to a business. Typically, it involves a wide variety of tasks and includes summarising, analysing, and reporting transactions to the relevant authorities. Just like corporate finance, accounting is a necessary function of any business for financial stability and success. Often, corporate finance can be considered in terms of management or accounting, with the latter relating on a greater level to the collection and recording of key information, and this in turn is used within the management of corporate finance.

Corporate finance relies on the balance sheet of the borrower and is used to procure finance for a project such as a new factory. It is prepared in order to provide full security to the lender. Project finance, on the other hand, relies on the credit of the project that is being financed or the projected cash flow to determine if they’ll invest. It requires more extensive due diligence than corporate finance as it has no recourse to the project’s sponsors other than what they agreed to contractually. Another major difference centres on the project’s potential failure: if under project financing, the creditors do not have a claim on the profit from other projects; corporate finance, however, gives investors this right.

  Why I Founded Nordens
Accounting 2 You

In November 2002, having sold our other business interests off earlier in the year, I decided to set up Nordens Chartered Accountants. The easy part was knowing how to do it, as I had established and built a smaller practice a few years earlier. The difficult part, for me, was not following the traditional accountancy path. Having run businesses, both successfully and unsuccessfully, I wanted to help business owners resolve their short term problems and work with them to achieve their longer term goals. Business has always been my interest and I love that I can help business owners achieve what seems like the impossible every single working day.
